If I like you, I give you food for Christmas.  That’s just how it is.

I just think there’s no better way to show someone that you care than to take the time to make something for them with your own hands.  It doesn’t need to be difficult to make or hard to create.  But taking the time to actually craft something in your own kitchen or home says something.  It says, “You’re worth my time.”

I know I love homemade gifts during the holidays.  I mean, a gal can only have so many candles, right?

With that in mind, I’ve teamed up with a fabulous group of bloggers for #HandcraftedHolidays ~ a full line-up of handcrafted foodie posts just for you!  And we’ve got a great giveaway from Freund Container & Supply so you can recreate some of our homemade holiday posts in your home!

I whipped up some Homemade Mexican Hot Sauce to give as gifts from my Cocina.  I mean, who doesn’t need a little bit of spice with their holiday?

This Mexican Hot Sauce, originally from Behind the Bites, is incredibly easy to make.  And it makes a good amount (about 2 quarts), so there’s enough for you to pass around.  But, if you need more, this recipe is simple to double or triple.  Because, you know, the more hot sauce the better.

This batch that I’m sharing for today’s #HandcraftedHolidays is mild to medium in flavor, as far as hot sauces go.  So, it’s not so hot that you’ll be blowing anyone’s toupee off.  I’ve used ours as a condiment for burgers and breakfast burritos, and I even used it in place of tomato sauce on pizza!  We’re talking serious yum!

I packaged my Homemade Mexican Hot Sauce up in these cute little Gourmet Glass Jars, courtesy of Freund.  I even made some labels to attach to my jars, because it’s important to announce the homemade goodness that’s held inside.

So, if you’re looking for something a bit different for your handcrafted holiday gift, whip up a batch of this Mexican Hot Sauce.  Your peeps will thank you.

Now, don’t forget to read down past the recipe for your chance to enter our #HandcraftedHolidays giveaway, and to see the list of recipes other bloggers are sharing as part of today’s handcrafted holiday celebration!

Homemade Mexican Hot Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups red onion, finely chopped
  • 4 jalapenos, finely chopped
  • 5 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 3 cups tomatoes, chopped (approximately 7-8 Roma tomatoes)
  • 1 oz. dried Pasilla chiles, seeds and stems removed
  • 2 oz. dried Ancho chiles, seeds and stems removed
  • 3 cups chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

In a large soup pot heated over medium heat, sauté onions and jalapenos in a small bit of olive oil until softened (3-4 minutes). Once veggies are softened, add garlic and sauté for 1 more minute.

Add the tomatoes and chiles to the pot, cooking with the other veggies until the tomatoes begin to release their juices (5-6 minutes). Add salt and pepper, to taste, to the mixture.

Add chicken broth, bring the mixture to a boil, and then reduce heat to a simmer. Allow the sauce to simmer for 30-40 minutes, or until the liquid has reduced by 1/3-1/2. Once liquid has reduced, remove the pot from the heat, season once more with salt and pepper, and allow it to cool for 1 hour.

Blend sauce till smooth in a blender or food processor. Ladle into jars and store for up to 1 week in the refrigerator for use.
